Abstract

Objective: The objective is to evaluate some immunomodulatory effects of live attenuated sheep pox virus (RM-65 strain) and sheep and goat pox virus (KSGP-0240 strain) vaccines for evaluating the efficacy against lumpy skin disease (LSD) in Holstein dairy cattle.

Design: Controlled, random study.

Animals: For the experiment, 25 female Holstein dairy cattle aged three to five years and three months of pregnancy were used. The cattle were divided equally into five groups; G1, G2, G3, G4, G5, and they were injected with saline, RM-65 intradermal (ID), RM-65 subcutaneous (SC), KSGP-0240 ID and KSGP-0240 SC respectively. Whole blood and serum samples were collected before vaccination and at 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th week post vaccination (PV).

Results: revealed no clinical signs appeared on the animals along the experiment. However, significance lymphocytic leukocytosis and elevation of phagocytic activity, phagocytic index against killed Candida albicans (C. albicans), and total protein (TP), globulins and nitric oxide (NO) were prominent in all groups in relation to control one (G1). At the 1st week PV, G5 had significant elevation of the antibody titer than others and all vaccinated groups were higher than positive control until fourth week. At the 3rd week PV, a significant elevation of the phagocytic activity had existing in G4 than control (G1) and G2.

Conclusion and clinical relevance: The studied parameters were helpful as the two vaccines raised the immunity while KSGP-0240 strain vaccine had light action, which is more than the RM-65 strain, and the rout of administration had no influence.
