THE PROTECTIVE EFFECT OF FUCOIDAN, BROWN ALGAE EXTRACT, AGAINST ACETAMINOPHEN HEPATOTOXICITY IN RAT

Abstract

Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats were equally divided randomly into four groups to asses the protective effect of fucoidan against Acetaminophen induced hepatotoxicity. Elevated serum enzymes, mid-zonal vacuolar degeneration or steatosis, necrosis, hepatitis, calcified ,Cup shaped mitochondria and glycogen depletion were noticed in rats were intraperitoneal injected (IP) with (800mg/ kg. B.wt.). Fucoidan administration prior and simultaneously with acetaminophen ameliorated the induced hepatopathy. It lowered the serum enzymes and malondialdehyde (MDA) formation. In conclusion, our finding proved that fucoidan administration prior and simultaneous acetaminophen toxicity induced protective effects against hepatic damage through scavenging oxidative stressors and reduced lipid peroxidation.
