Abstract

Thirty male mature albino rat were used in this study. They were of about 250 gm body weight. The rats were randomly divided into six equal groups each of (5). The first group was given normal saline 0.2 ml/200gm.b. wt.I.P. for fourteen successive days (control group). , while the second group I.P. injected with normal saline 0.2ml/200gm. b. wt. for fourteen successive days followed by a single I.P. dose of diluted CCL4. 0.4ml/100gm b.wt. on the 15th day. The third group was I.P. injected with ascorbic acid ( vitamin C) 100mg/kg b. wt. for fourteen successive days followed by single I.P. dose of CCL4 0.4ml/100gm b. wt. on the 15th day. The obtained results showed that there was a significant increase in the levels of albumin whereas a significant decrease was observed in AST activity total bilirubin, direct bilirubin and glucose levels when compared with CCL4 treated rats. The fourth group was given corn oil 0.2ml/200gm b.wt. IP. For fourteen successive days. The fifth group of rats were given repeated I.P. dose of @-tocopherol 100mg/kg b. wt. dissolved in corn oil for fourteen successive days followed by a single I.P. dose of diluted CCL4 0.04ml/100gm b wt. on the 15th day. There was a significant increase in the levels of total proteins and albumin while the glucose level was significantly decreased when compared with those of control rats. There was a significant decrease in AST activity total bilirubin, direct bilirubin as well as glucose levels, while a significant increase was recorded in total proteins and albumin when compared with those of CCL4 treated rats. The six group of rats given repeated I.P. dose of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) 100mg/kg b. wt. and @-tocopherol (vitamin E) 100mg/kg b. wt. dissolved in corn oil for fourteen successive days followed by a single I.P. dose of diluted CCL4 0.4ml/100gm on the 15th, there was a significant increase in total proteins while glucose level was significantly decreased when compared with those of the control rats.
